Sam Kaufman recently reconnected with his sister, Ruth Sacks, after experiencing major medical improvements through Innovative Senior Care (ISC), a home health and therapy program offered exclusively by Brookdale Senior Living.
Sacks, a resident of Hallmark Creve Coeur, referred her brother to ISC at Hallmark Creve Coeur after he became too physically weak to perform his daily activities. He could no longer go up and down stairs, walk long distances or tie his shoes. Living independently, improving Kaufman’s strength was vital to his well-being.
On June 20, 2011, Kaufman began coming to Hallmark Creve Coeur to work with the ISC team three times a week. With the help of ISC therapists, Kaufman performed strengthening and balancing activities.
Kaufman’s biggest reward from his ISC therapy came when he was finally able to walk to his sister’s apartment, which is at the end of the hallway at Hallmark Creve Coeur. For more than two years, Kaufman has been visiting his sister at Hallmark Creve Coeur, but would wait in the lobby while his daughter brought Sacks downstairs to him. Until now, he was never able to visit his sister’s home. After his success with ISC, Kaufman was able to walk to his sister’s home for the very first time.
When Kaufman’s family came in from out of town, he surprised them with his physical improvements. He walked comfortably, easily entered and exited the family’s van and put his shoe’s on without assistance.
Although he is thankful for his newfound strength, Kaufman has one small problem resulting from his therapy.
"Now I’m strong enough to go to the casino," Kaufman said. "I’m able to get around there so well, but I keep losing money!"
Exclusive to Brookdale, ISC offers ancillary services including physical, occupational and speech therapies; specialized clinical programs designed for seniors; health education programs; as well as private and Medicare certified home health services.
Studies have shown residents of senior living communities who engage in a comprehensive health and wellness program – including rehabilitation, fitness and education – achieve a higher quality of life and maintain their independence longer.
Engaging residents in health and wellness programs supports Brookdale’s Optimum Life, a platform geared toward cultivating whole-person wellness through fulfillment in six key dimensions. The six dimensions of Optimum Life are emotional, social, physical, intellectual, spiritual and purposeful.
Established in 2000, Innovative Senior Care employs more than 3,000 full-time therapists, 400 nurses and operates over 400 clinics and 40 home health agencies in retirement communities, assisted living communities and skilled nursing facilities.
